Skills for effective communication in occupational therapy practice (2024)

Abstract

This chapter will articulate the importance of communication in occupational therapy practice, describe the communication cycle and define the different types of communication (verbal, non-verbal and written) involved, and summarise and apply various strategies and frameworks that can assist therapists in developing and refining verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills. It will also outline strategies to build and enhance the therapeutic use of self in occupational therapy service, explain methods to promote effective communication when working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, and help readers identify and apply skills, frameworks and strategies to promote effective communication when working in health care and professional teams.
