A hands-free dog leash is any leash that you don't have to hold onto. Usually, it consists of a belt that fits around the wearer’s waist with a leash that goes from the belt to the dog. However, you can occasionally find cross-body hands-free leashes, which are worn like messenger bags.
Are hands-free leashes safe?
Hands-free leashes are safe in general, but if you have an exceptionally strong dog that pulls on the leash, you could get pulled over and hurt yourself. A bungee area on the leash does help absorb shocks, however. Hands-free leashes are best used with dogs that are properly leash trained already.
What are hands-free leashes good for?
For some people with disabilities or injuries, hands-free leashes are essential for dog walking, if holding a leash for long periods or holding a leash full stop isn't an option. Aside from that, they're great for running, hiking challenging trails, pushing a stroller, and any other time you might want free use of your hands.
Why do some hands-free leashes feature handles?
These handles are for times when you might need to get closer control of your dog, such as near traffic. However, you may not feel you need these handles, for instance, if your dog walks to heel reliably.
